Phases of Menstrual Cycle

Phases of Menstrual Cycle

Please keep in mind that individual experiences can vary widely, and not all women will experience the same symptoms or at the same intensity. The following is a general guideline:

Menstrual Phase (Day 1-5):

  • Menstrual bleeding occurs as the uterine lining sheds.
  • Common symptoms include abdominal cramps, bloating, fatigue, mood swings, and headaches.

Follicular Phase (Day 6-14):

  • FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles.
  • Energy and mood levels tend to improve.
  • Some women may experience a rise in libido.
  • Cervical mucus becomes clearer and more watery.

Ovulation Phase (Around Day 14):

  • An egg is released from a mature ovarian follicle.
  • Some women may experience mild pelvic pain or a sensation on one side (mittelschmerz).
  • Cervical mucus may resemble raw egg whites, indicating fertility.
  • Libido tends to peak for some women.

Luteal Phase (Day 15-28):

  • Corpus luteum forms in the ovary after ovulation, releasing progesterone.
  • Progesterone can lead to symptoms like breast tenderness, bloating, and mood swings.
  • Energy levels might decrease.
  • Some women may experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms like irritability, mood swings, headaches, and food cravings.

Premenstrual Phase (Few days before menstruation):

  • PMS symptoms can intensify, including mood changes, bloating, breast tenderness, and fatigue.
  • Emotional symptoms like irritability, anxiety, or sadness may be more pronounced for some.
  • Physical discomfort and pain from cramps might increase.

Remember that the length of each phase can vary from woman to woman and from cycle to cycle. Also, these are general trends and not everyone will experience all of these symptoms. Some women might have very mild symptoms or even be asymptomatic throughout their cycle.

If you or someone you know experiences severe or disruptive symptoms, it's a good idea to consult a healthcare professional, as they can provide personalized advice and potential treatments to manage any discomfort or irregularities.
